Administrative history

The Scottish Office Industry Department was formed on 1 June 1973 as the Scottish Economic Planning Department with the functions of regional development, electricity, highland and rural development, tourism, transport services (excluding urban passenger transport, infrastructure and rural bus grants) and New Town Development Corporations. On 1 July 1975 Scottish Economic Planning Department took over from the Department of Industry certain functions relating industrial development in Scotland. On 15 December 1975 it assumed responsibility for the Scottish Development Agency which had been established in 1975. In September 1976, responsibility for transport services other than Peterhead Bay Harbour were transferred back to the Scottish Development Department. On 1 July 1977 Scottish Economic Planning Department assumed responsibility for the activities in Scotland of the Manpower Services Commission. The Scottish Economic Planning Department became the Industry Department for Scotland on 1 November 1983 and later, the Scottish Office Industry Department. In 1999 the Scottish Office was replaced by the Scottish Executive.
