Administrative history

The North Harris estate comprises of 62,500 acres of croft land, common grazing and open hill ground which includes the Clisham, the highest mountain in the Outer Hebrides. The boarder of the estate runs from Boghas Glas to Ceann Loch Reasort.

The North Harris Estate was bought from previous owner, Jonathan Bulmer, in 2003 through a community buy out. The buy out, valued at £2.2 million, was undertaken through The North Harris Trust, a community owned company established to manage the transaction. The Trust manage approximately 130 crofts of which 10 are owned privately and also the coastal fishing rights. The community decided not to purchase Amhuinnsuidhe Castle as part of the buy out and this was purchased by businessman Ian Scarr Hall, who had been coming to Harris on holiday for years. In 2005, the community wanted to buy the Loch Seaforth Estate from the owner, Ms Poinchaud. This purchase took the total amount of acres up to 62,500. The Trust aim to increase employment, address local housing needs and protect and enhance local cultural and natural heritage.

North Harris Trading Ltd is a wholly owned subsidiary of North Harris Trust which operates a management committee of its own. They promote energy conservation, investigate and deliver energy generation projects, promote and enhance recycling facilities and identify measures to tackle fuel poverty.
