Administrative history

The Society in Scotland for Propagating Christian Knowledge (SSPCK) was founded in Edinburgh in 1709 was primarily concerned with the education and civilisation of the inhabitants of the Highlands of Scotland. The organisation was strictly Presbyterian in its outlook, taught only the Presbyterian religion, reading, writing, church music and arithmetic, and initially permitted only English as the language of instruction and conversation of the scholars. Many SSPCK Schools were established in the Highlands until the activity of the society began to decline in the mid 19th century, as much of its work was taken over by the Gaelic Societies of Inverness, Glasgow and Edinburgh.
