Scope and content
In terms of the Secretary for Scotland Acts, 1885 and 1887 the responsibilities of the Treasury and the Board of Trade relative to the Fishery Board for Scotland were transferred to the Scottish Office. These fisheries files cover all matters arising out of these responsibilities except files relating to the Harbours, Piers and Ferries (S) Act, 1937 and its operation which form a separate series AF58.
Responsibilities represented in this series include: fishing industry; fisheries legislation and regulation; White Fish Commission and Herring Industry Board; territorial waters; foreign trade agreements; piers and harbours; grants and subsidies; illegal fishing; whaling; fishing rights; control of seals and river pollution.
Of particular interest for the Outer Hebrides are files relating to herring fishing, trawling, lights and beacons, and whaling. Further individual files on ports and harbours are held for:
Lewis: Carloway, Port of Ness, Skigersta, Borve, Shader, Loch Resort, Portnaguran, Bernera, Portnambothag,
Harris: Tarbert, Obbe (Leverburgh), Scalpay
Uists: Loch Carnan, Saltiveg, Boreray, Scannabhaile, Eriskay
Benbecula: Petersport
Barra: Castlebay, Brevig
