History

The society was formed on the 23 January 1901 with the motto ‘We do not want to get the better of one another, we want to increase each other’s ideas.’ The society met in the Lewis Coffee House (currently the Star Inn). The president was Dr Donald Murray, vice-president W D Kennedy, the chairman was Angus Macleod, and the treasurer and secretary was Angus Macleod. The last entry in the minute book states that due to apathy the group would not be meeting over the 1909/1910 winter season.
