The family papers relate principally to the Tolmies, tacksmen from 1773 of Uiginish in Skye, and their descendents. H.H. Mackenzie's grandmother Annabella Tolmie, youngest daughter of John Tolmie 1st tacksman, married Hector Mackenzie son of John Mackenzie of Ballone in 1826. Their son John Tolmie Mackenzie and his son John were successively factors to the Macleods of Macleod, and John Tolmie Mackenzie also had extensive local business interests of his own. Other Tolmie marriages brought connections with tacksmen families in North Uist - the Macdonalds of Scolpaig and William MacNeil of Newton - who were also local entrepreneurs. John Macdonald of Scolpaig, son of Barbara Tolmie, was also predecessor of H H Mackenzie as factor of North Uist (1855-1888). The surviving papers reflect the business and public interests of this network of tacksmen families, as well as their personal affairs, and complement the papers of major land-owning families such as the Macleods of Macleod and Macdonalds of Sleat, for the history of the area in the nineteenth century.
