History
Lochmaddy Sheriff Court operates within the Sheriffdom of Grampian, Highlands and Islands, which also comprises the courts situated at Aberdeen, Banff, Dingwall, Dornoch, Elgin, Fort William, Inverness, Kirkwall, Lerwick, Peterhead, Portree, Stonehaven, Stornoway, Tain and Wick.
By order of the Secretary of State [1902, no.80] the appointment of a separate sheriff-substitute at Lochmaddy was discontinued, the sheriff-substitute at Portree also taking the courts for the Lochmaddy District. Shortly after the Second World War jurisdiction in Harris with the exception of Bernera was transferred to the sheriff-substitute at Stornoway although this does not appear to have occured under Statutory Order. The sheriff court at Nunton in Benbecula appears to have been formed in 1804.
As of The Sheriff Court Districts (Alteration of Boundaries) Order 1996, Lochmaddy Sheriff Court District covers wards 24-30 in the area of Western Isles.
