History

Set up under the Local Government Act 1929, Lewis District Committee took over the poor law functions of the former parishes of Lewis: Barvas, Lochs, Stornoway and Uig. The Public Assistance Committee was itself abolished by the National insurance Act 1948 although the joint committee appears to have continued.
