The Local Government Act 1929 disbanded the Parish Councils of Barvas, Lochs, Stornoway and Uig and the Lewis District Committee, vesting their functions in Ross & Cromarty County Council headquartered in Dingwall. Lewis District Councils was formed as an independent authority with its own minor powers and to serve as agents for the County Council in carrying out its functions, with the exception of police and education. The Council’s powers could include public health, nursing services, housing, roads, harbours, water supply and drainage. The Act created Public Assistance Committees who took over the former functions of the Parishes, including the administration of the Poor Law until its abolition in 1948. Local government reorganisation in 1975 abolished Lewis District Council, transferring their powers to a new local authority, Comhairle nan Eilean (Western Isles Islands Council) headquartered in Stornoway.
