History

Carloway Mills was established in c1960 and has changed hands several times during that period. HTT (Manufacturing) Ltd were incorporated in 2003. In 2010, the general Manager was Ann MacCallum, the first female manager of a Harris Tweed mill.
The mill prepares, dyes and manufactures the warp and weft wools that are then sent out to individual weavers to produce the tweed. Quality control and finishing is then undertaken when the finished cloth is returned from the weaver.
The mill is innovating and looking at new markets, such as feminine tweeds and links with designer markets. Notable examples include working with international sports companies and recreating a tweed for Matt Smith’s jacket in his second series as Doctor Who. A lambs wool tweed was produced by the mill for use in Scottish singer Alyth McCormack’s white tweed wedding dress.
